ADD and Phonics | ||
Some children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) may actually have a reading problem, not ADD. If you can’t read well, it’s hard to sit still in your chair and do your work. Dr. Campbell found this to be true of many children sent to him as possible ADD cases. You can read Dr Campbell's thoughts about ADD and phonics at the National Right To Read Foundation. After reading Dr. Campbell's theory about ADD and phonics, we discovered that a friend’s daughter who was diagnosed with ADD had a reading problem after being taught to read with whole word methods. They are currently teaching her to read with phonics. You can use a reading grade level test to find out your child’s reading grade level. It only takes a few minutes. If your child is reading below grade level, phonics can fix the problem. If your child has been diagnosed with ADD, understanding their personality type and learning style can also help. | |
