The use of Unified Pronouncing Print (UPP) is another way to continue improving your reading, spelling, and pronunciation abilities. Another good resource for learning how to sound out multi-syllabic words is Webster's Blue Backed Speller, or The American Spelling Book, free online from Don Potter's Education Page. It is especially useful for figuring out which vowel sounds will mush to the schwa sound of uh as it lists words by accent, and unaccented syllables are more likely to mush to the schwa sound. As a bonus, it can also be used for spelling practice. Yet another good resourse for word practice is Martin Carbone's list of 9,000 phonetically regular English words, compiled with the help of Alan Beale's dictionary lists. | |
